You can almost imagine them as the characters in the 1994 Disney film. The performers and cast are all so talented and professional. Seeing talented actors in animal costumes and giant, hollow puppets makes the show magical and exciting. The musical has been in existence for more than 20 years and is still, beyond doubt, one of the best musicals to be produced. In addition, THE LION KING has been awarded more than 70 major art awards, including the 1998 NY Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, some Grammy awards in 1999.
The musical has won six 1998 Tony Awards, Best Musical, Best Scenic Design (Richard Hudson), Best Costume Design (Julie Taymor), Best Lighting Design (Donald Holder), Best Choreography (Garth Fagan), and Best Direction of a Musical, which makes Taymor the first woman in theatrical history bestowed with the honor. When the weight of responsibility and a desperate plea from the now ravaged Pride Lands come to find the adult prince, Simba must restore the pride land to her usual state by taking on a formidable enemy, his uncle Scar, and fulfill his destiny to be king. He adjusted and got accustomed to his new life but not for so long before reality struck. He met two hilarious and unlikely friends, Timon and Pumba, and Simba starts his life anew with them as his companion. When a great tragedy, masterminded by Simba’s cunning and wicked uncle, Scar, led to the king’s death, Simba ran away from the Pride Lands, leaving everyone and everything he knew behind. The storyline is about a young lion prince living in the African Pride Lands. The musical features actors in animal costumes and giant, hollow puppets.
It was produced by Disney Theatrical Productions in 1997 and was directed by Taymor. The Lion King is a musical adaptation of the Academy Award-winning 1994 Disney film and the 8th longest-running musical.
